Brief History of Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers were established in 1877, originally named at St Luke's FC. Two years later they became Wolverhampton Wanderers after a merger with the local cricket club. One of the founding members of the Football League Wolverhampton Wanderers' name can be found in the earliest football history books. Wolves won their first FA Cup in 1893, beating Everton in the final before most of their Premier League peers were founded.

In recent years Wolves have had a heavy Portuguese influence with both players and managers (Nuno Espirito Santo and Bruno Lage). They have even sported a change strip closely matching the Portugal national team kit. Wolves last major success was a League Cup win in 1980, a statistic they are looking to rectify.

Legendary Players for Wolves

Steve Bull played at Molineux for 13 years from 1986 to 1999 scoring 250 goals, enough to have a stand named after him at Wolves' home ground. He moved to the club from West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion where he played his only game in the top flight (he only made four appearances for Albion). He joined Wolves in the Fourth Division and fired them up to the Second Division.

He achieved a rare feat, earning 13 caps for England despite playing his matchdays in the second tier of English football.

50/50's Titles

Wolves golden age came in the 1950's. The club won three First Division titles in 1953/54, 1957/58 and 1958/59 (where they beat Sir Matt Busby's Manchester United team into the runners-up spot). The team was managed by Stan Cullis who now has a statue of him outside Molineux in honour of his achievements.

Cullis turned home matches into a fortress and his teams were just as attacking in away matches. Captain Billy Wright is the most well-known name at the football club from that era, a name that fans across the United Kingdom will recognise.
Cullis' side went on to win the FA Cup in 1960 against Blackburn Rovers (3-0).

Wolverhampton Wanderers Rivalries

The Baggies of West Bromwich Albion are Wolves' biggest rivals. On the pitch West Brom have had the better of the 'West Country Derby' and Wolves have not triumphed against West Brom since a 3-1 Premier League success in 2011.

Other West Midlands rivalries exist against Aston Villa, a team they played in one of their earliest ever fixtures.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far

At the mid-point of the season Wolves sat in the top-half of the table. After losing their first three matches against Leicester City, Manchester United and Spurs, Bruno Lage's team lost only two games in the next 11. Wins against Newcastle United, Aston Villa, West Ham United and Watford were particularly impressive. Narrow defeats against Liverpool and Manchester City could have derailed Wolves but wins against Brighton and Brentford have them back on track.

Trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Chelsea's Stamford Bridge remain for Wolves in their quest to kick-off the 2022/23 season playing European football.
