Brief History of Brentford FC
Despite a spell in the top flight in the mid-20th century Brentford have not been in the top division for decades until they earned promotion at the end of the 2020/21 season. The Bees were founded in 1889 and played most of their history at Griffin Park before moving into the Brentford Community Stadium in 2000. Unlike the Bees of Barnet FC across London, the Bees of Brentford do not play in a gold and black kit, playing in red and white since the 1920’s.
Brentford FC Legendary Players
Brentford FC have a Hall of Fame that can include players or managers and coaching staff. Due to the club spending significant time in the lower reaches of the Football League many of the players will be unrecognisable to the casual football observer. But to Brentford fans Ken Coote was a stalwart. Making over 550 appearances from 1949-1964, near to the end of his career at Brentford he helped them to the Fourth Division title in 1962/63.
Brentford FC's Promised Land
With the riches that come with the Premier League, Brentford’s promotion at the end of the 2020/21 season is arguably their greatest ever achievement. Beating Swansea City two-nil in the Championship Play-Off Final after being on the losing side the season before against Fulham meant the Bees buzzed up to the Premier League.
First-half goals from Championship regular season top scorer Ivan Toney and Emiliano Marcondes gave Brentford something to defend in the second-half, saving them from extra-time that was their undoing the season before. Danish coach Thomas Frank was part of that disappointment and his success in 2021 helped him to win the Danish Football Union Coach of the Year Award.
Triumphing in the ‘Richest Game in Football’ has meant Brentford fans who were maybe unable to see their team win in the Play-Off final due to COVID restrictions on the attendance have since made the trip to the top grounds in the Premier League. Beating Arsenal two-nil in their first Premier League Game at the Brentford Community Stadium got them off to a flying start.
Brentford FC's Top Gambler
Brentford Football Club have been owned since 2012 by Matthew Benham, a successful sports gambler who later founded the company ‘Matchbook’. Previously involved with Danish club FC Midtjylland he brings an analytical approach to football, similar to the method immortalised in the ‘Moneyball’ film about US baseball. His approach has lead to the club being valued at over £200,000 making the club a success off the pitch as well as on it.
Current Premier League Stars of Brentford FC
Brentford Football Club have a good combination of experienced professionals and new young starlets destined for future success. They are marshalled on matchday at the back by the ex-Leeds United cult hero Pontus Jansson who adds experience, stability and the odd goal from set-piece situations.
At the other end is the much heralded Toney, who has picked up from his top-scoring exploits from last season. Without scoring as many goals he has looked impressive in link-up play and has still notched against the likes of Manchester United already this season.
Brentford FC's 2021/22 Season So Far
With FA Cup trips to the likes of Everton and Premier League wins against the likes of Arsenal, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Brentford FC are enjoying their first season in the Premier League.
A tough January that included defeats against Manchester United and Liverpool means they will have a tough second half of the season.
With London derbies against established Premier League rivals such as Chelsea, Arsenal and Crystal Palace, Brentford will fancy their chances of survival.
Sting Like a Bee
Brentford Football Club rarely ‘float like a butterfly’ but they often ‘sting like a bee’. The origin of Brentford’s ‘Bees’ nickname comes from the late 1800’s when a group of local students called the club the B’s when supporting one of the players. ‘B’s’ turned into ‘Bees’ and the name stuck into the Premier League era.
