Brief History of Southampton FC

Southampton Football Club was founded in 1885. Originally named St Mary's YMA (Young Men's Association), they had a couple more name changes until settling on Southampton FC in 1896. Spending half of their existence in the lower leagues it wasn't until 1966 that they initially gained top flight status. Finishing runners-up to Manchester City they were allocated a promotion slot. By and large with a couple of periods out of it Southampton have been in the top flight ever since. They are now in their 10th consecutive season in the Premier League.

Legendary Players for Southampton FC

Some Southampton fans may say Mick Channon but most would say Matt Le Tissier is their most legendary player. A Channel Islander by birth Le Tissier is once of the most gifted players to have played in the United Kingdom. With memberships to the 'extraordinary goals club' and 'unbelievable pieces of individual skill' club Le Tissier turned down offers from 'bigger clubs' to stay with the Saints.

Looking back over 'Le God's' goals, a little chip against Manchester United and a remarkable finish against Newcastle United legendary status is no exaggeration.

FA Cup Winners

A decade after they entered the top flight Southampton won their most prized piece of silverware, the FA Cup. Bobby Stokes scored the winning goal in front of just under 100,000 fans packed into Wembley Stadium for the most anticipated matchday of the season.

En-route to the final they beat Crystal Palace in the semi-final at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge and in the third round got past a stubborn Aston Villa side after a replay at Villa Park.

The Saints would reach the FA Cup Final again in 2003, this time on the end of a 1-0 scoreline against Arsenal.

Southampton FC Rivalries

Southampton FC tickets sell out immediately when bitter South Coast rivals Portsmouth visit St Marys' Stadium. When in the same league season tickets are bought just for this game and the ticket office phone rings off the hook.

The rivalry stems from the naval history and has continued into the modern era. However the teams now rely on cup competitions to come up against each other having played in different divisions since 2012. The last cup meeting in 2019's league cup ended with a 4-0 away triumph for Southampton.

If you're looking to go to a Southampton FC game then you'll find that Portsmouth is going to be the top ticket in terms of atmosphere at the ground. It might also mean that the price is quite high. If you're looking to go and see Southampton FC play and are less bothered about who they are playing then you can often get a good deal on tickets for teams that do not have long-standing rivalries with. So you might get a deal on a Southampton vs. Burnley ticket, or say one for Norwich city.

Current Premier League Stars for The Saints

Despite being born in Portsmouth James Ward-Prowse has spent his whole career at the Saints and is one of their best and most skillful players. Behind to greats like Man Utd's David Beckham when it comes to the amount of free-kicks scored in the Premier League, it is a danger to concede free-kicks around the penalty area. He once scored two free-kicks in a game against Aston Villa.

A mix of young players like former Spurs junior Kyle Walker-Peters and old players such as Theo Walcott, resigned from Everton the Saints are well equipped for the Premier League.

Southampton Football Club's 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far
Starting with a defeat at Everton, the Saints ended up drawing their next four games. The season so far has carried on being a mixed-bag of wins, draws and defeats.

A 4-1 triumph at home against Brentford, followed by a 3-1 defeat at Wolves. A 4-0 away defeat at Liverpool followed by a creditable 2-2 draw at home against Leicester City have been typical of the season.

In the second half the Saints face daunting trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Old Trafford, Turf Moor, Elland Road and ending the season at the King Power Stadium.
