Brief History of Manchester City FC

Founded in 1880 under the name of St Marks, the name Manchester City FC came about in 1894 after seven years being called Ardwick Association FC. Manchester City had been based at Maine Road in the Moss Side area of Manchester from 1923 onwards until moving the few miles to the Etihad Stadium in 2003, the revamped former stadium that hosted athletics at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in the City.

The Manchester City of the 2000's is unrecognisable to the one that operated in the 1980's and 1990's after the takeover by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2008 and the riches that have followed.

Legendary Players for Manchester City

Man City fans look fondly upon the late 1960's and early 1970's and the star of that team was the 'King of the Kippax', Colin Bell. Midfielder Bell played over 500 times for the Sky Blues and picked up major honours including a Second Division title, a First Division title, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a European Cup Winners Cup. His England career starting after the 1966 triumph at Wembley he was no doubt one of the best players in the United Kingdom at the time.

Pep Talk

One of the most successful managers of all time Pep Guardiola was persuaded to leave Bayern Munich to join Man City in 2016. Since then he has established a unique style of play that others can only try to follow. Sporting his casual look on the sidelines Guardiola is less than casual about his football, briefing his players to the n'th degree so they know their role in the functionality of the team.

Home matches have become an almost guaranteed three points, similar to the Alex Ferguson era at Manchester United and City's possession based game straight from kick-off undoubtably has Pep Guardiola's signature all over it. Oppostion clubs know that any match vs Manchester City will require a lot of time without the ball.

While at the Etihad Stadium he has claimed three Premier Leagues, one FA Cup and four League Cups. All that is missing is a UEFA Champions League title.

Manchester City Rivalries

Manchester United are Manchester City's traditional rivals. For so long a fixture that Manchester City went into as the underdogs and are now unquestionably the top football club in the city.

A rivalry with Liverpool has grown over recent seasons as the teams have become direct title rivals. The possession game of Guardiola against the high press game of Jurgen Klopp is always a fascinating watch.

Games against Tottenham Hotspur after controversy in recent seasons in the Champions League and Chelsea are also fixtures City fans make sure they are there on matchday for.

Current Premier League Stars for Manchester City

With legends Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and David Silva no longer at the club the biggest player in the Man City line-up is now Kevin de Bruyne. At face value the Belgian midfielder is an unbelievable passer of the ball but he also has an unstoppable passion for scoring goals. Worth the match tickets alone, when he finishes his career in England de Bruyne will be remembered as one of the best ever Premier League players.

Manchester City's 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far

The Citizens lost their first match of the season away at Spurs before bouncing back to destroy Arsenal and Norwich at the Etihad. An uncharacteristic home goalless draw against Southampton was followed by a remarkable away win at Chelsea.

An unlikely home defeat against Crystal Palace was preceded by convincing wins against Burnley and Brighton & Hove Albion but City's inconsistent form lead some observers thinking that they could be challenged this season.

But that Palace game sparked a winning streak of 12 matches in a row as all in front of City were brushed aside with startling panache. Brentford, Everton, Watford and Aston Villa could not keep up with City's passing game. Leeds United conceded seven and Newcastle United four. Not even the in form West Ham United could take a point.

That has set City up for the second-half of the season and home fans at the likes of Carrow Road, Goodison Park, Molineux and Selhurst Park quaking in their boots.
