Brief History of Norwich City FC

The Canaries were founded in 1892 and have played their home matches at Carrow Road since 1935. Based near the train station and in the city centre, Saturday matchdays are busy in the city up until kick-off. Reaching the top flight for the first time in the early 1970's Norwich have had intermittent spells in the First Division and Premier League ever since. In 2021 TV Chef and owner Delia Smith appointed her namesake Dean Smith, with recent experience with Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Legendary Players for Norwich City

Martin Peters won the World Cup with England in 1966 and also made over 200 appearances in the yellow of Norwich during his career. Peters was part of the Norwich team that established themselves in the First Division in the early 70's, solidifying the future direction of the club. Midfielder Peters made just over 200 appearances for the Canaries and scored 44 goals. Despite making more appearances and scoring more goals for West Ham United he is still revered in the capital of Norfolk.

Bayern Who?

Arguable the most memorable moment in Norwich City history was their only foray into European football, the UEFA Cup in 1993/94. They beat Bayern Munich in the Olympic Stadium in a match that included a sweet volley by Jeremy Goss against the German giants.

Norwich had qualified for the competition after finishing third in the Premier League the previous season behind Manchester United and Aston Villa. Alongside Goss, Brian Gunn was solid between the posts, Mark Bowen also scored and Ruel Fox was a constant thorn in Bayern's side.

The Canaries were beaten by Inter Milan in the next round but history had already been made. Two months after that match manager Mike Walker left for an unsuccessful spell at Everton and the following season Norwich were relegated.

Norwich City Rivalries

Norwich have a huge rivalry with Ipswich Town, over the border in Suffolk. Norwich are one game behind Ipswich in terms of overall wins between the sides, however Norwich won the last meeting in 2019. The East Anglian derby is as far East as you can get in the United Kingdom and with so few clubs in the area although they are in different counties this is a huge game.

Most rivalries are based on geographic location but sometimes they can occur due to things that go on in games and with players or managers. Sometimes these rivalries go on for years or can be short lived so some fans might consider a team like Leeds United a rival or another team that is currently quite close in standings in the league, such as Burnley or Crystal Palace.

Current Premier League Stars for Norwich City

Norwich were promoted to the Premier League last season and sold their most prized asset Emi Buendia to Aston Villa. Scotland's Billy Gilmour (on loan from Chelsea) provides class in the centre of the park and Finnish striker Teemu Pukku provides the Carrow Road season ticket holders with regular goals. NCFC's Adam Idah is one of the hottest young talents in the league and has a bright future ahead of him.

Norwich City's 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far

Despite promotion the season before Daniel Farke paid for the club's poor start to the season with his job. Convincing defeats to Liverpool on the opening day of the season followed by defeats by Manchester City, Watford, Chelsea (7-0), Arsenal and Leicester City followed. Farke won his last game in charge against Brentford but the Norwich hierachy acted quickly.

The club moved quickly to bring in ex-Villa boss Dean Smith into the fold. He won his first game against Southampton but since then wins have been hard to come by. In relegation trouble, success for Norwich will be staying in the Premier League.
