Brief History of Burnley FC

Formed when Lancashire was one of the hotbeds of English football, Burnley FC came into being in 1882. The local rugby team decided to switch to football as the round ball game was becoming ever popular in the county. A year later they moved into Turf Moor that remains the home of the Clarets to this day. Incredibly successful in the early and mid 1900’s the measure of current manager Sean Dyche is keeping the team in the Premier League. A feat he achieves season after season by making Turf Moor a difficult place to play.

Legendary Burnley FC Players

Northern Irish attacking midfielder Jimmy McIlroy played just under 500 games in a 13 year spell (1950-1963) for Burnley scoring over 100 goals in the process. Signed from Glentoran McIlroy was the star in the team that won the 1959/60 First Division title. He is so revered in the town that a stand at Turf Moor is named after him and he was given the Freedom of Burnley in 2008. On top of that he received an MBE in 2011, the perfect hat-trick of honours.

Burnley FC Glory Years

Over 100 years ago Burnley won their first major trophy, the FA Cup. In 1914 the penultimate final before the suspension of the FA Cup due to the First World War Burnley beat Liverpool by a Bertram Freeman goal to nil in the last final played at Crystal Palace. This remains the club’s only FA Cup Final victory.

On the other side of the First World War in 1920/21 they won their maiden First Division title beating North West rivals Manchester City into second place by five points. They beat four teams by six goals that year, Aston Villa, Oldham Athletic, Sheffield United and Preston North End.

They would wait another 40 years until their next and only other league championship title. That was the one in 1959/60 driven by Jimmy McIlroy. Shortly after the club’s fortunes began to waver and they would drop down the divisions, even spending time in the fourth tier late in the 21st century before returning to the top flight and the Premier League in the 2000s.

The Dyche Factor

Without challenging for major honours, Sean Dyche is arguably the most successful Burnley manager in modern years. After taking over the Clarets in 2012 he is the longest-serving manager in the Premier League. Winning promotion from the Championship to the Premier League on two occasions the club has now resided in the top flight since 2016.

Not only has Dyche kept the team in the Premier League but a seventh-place finish in 2017/18 kicked off a European adventure for the Turf Moor faithful. After trips in the Europa League to Scotland and Turkey their travels were ended by Greek side Olympiacos before the group stages.

Dyche’s teams are well organised, tough tackling and do not allow opposition teams time or space to operate with. Operating on one of the Premier League’s lowest budgets Dyche has remained loyal to the Clarets despite offers to try and lure him away.

Current Premier League Stars of Burnley FC

At Burnley the star is the team and not necessarily the player. Formed on a low budget Burnley’s team is made up of hard-working players who operate to a model designed to frustrate opponents. There are young up and coming players such as midfielder Dwight McNeil and Ivory Coast international Max Cornet but seasoned professionals are more common. Ben Mee and James Tarkowski are rocks at the back and give opposition centre-forwards a tough time.

Burnley FC Rivals

Blackburn Rovers are Burnley’s biggest rivals. The Clarets hold the upper hand winning the last four matches between the sides including the last game, a two-nil away victory in the second round of the League Cup. Separated by just over 10 miles along the M65, the East Lancashire Derby is always a feisty affair. So if you're looking for Burnley v Blackburn tickets then you need to get in quickly as these can sell quickly.

Burnley rivals often come from the surrounding areas, but since these teams are not in the same league at Burnley, these games do not come around very often. this means that rivals tend to be other Premier League clubs, and often those that are close in terms of table position.

So whether you're an Everton, Chelsea, West Ham, Watford, Brentford or Arsenal fan you can expect a good atmosphere and game at Turf Moor.

Reason to Go to Turf Moor for Burnley FC Home Games

Turf Moor is a traditional matchday experience. With the stadium seemingly surrounded by hills at all sides and and the walk-up to the ground through densely-packed housing, Burnley are a real local club for season ticket holders. There are few grounds in the Premier League that can still provide this kind of matchday experience so give it a go if you get the chance.
