Brief History of Leicester City FC

Formed in 1884, originally as Leicester Fosse FC the name Leicester City became associated with the club from 1919. Playing their home games at Filbert Street until 2002 they moved to a new stadium, originally called the Walkers Stadium and now the King Power Stadium since 2011. The undoubted biggest achievement of the Foxes was winning the 2015/16 Premier League title after bookmakers had given them a 5000-1 chance at the start of the season. With the first team now managed by Brendan Rogers and the infrastructure around the club Leicester is a model for many Premier League and United Kingdom clubs.

Legendary Players for Leicester City

Leicester City have often been known as a selling club. One of the best English strikers of all time, Gary Lineker was born in Leicester and went on to score nearly 100 goals for the club before moving to Everton when he was at the peak of his powers. On a matchday he was deadly but he is arguably more remembered for his feats at other clubs.

Jamie Vardy, the talisman of the title-winning team in 2016 will be fondly remembered at Leicester City Football Club once his playing career comes to an end. Vardy scored 24 goals that season and famously turned down Arsenal when they put a big money bid in for him soon afterwards. A different type of striker to Lineker but equally as effective.

The Impossible Title

Just when the Premier League was looking like it would never be out of the hands of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United, Leicester City triumphed.

The previous season Leicester had avoided relegation by only six points, finishing just above Newcastle United, Sunderland and Aston Villa so the bookies offer of 5000-1 on them winning the title was not unrealistic. Similar odds were given for Brentford winning the title in 2021/22.

They started the season well, unbeaten in their first six matches they were finally defeated by Arsenal. It would then be another 11 matches till they went down by a goal to nil against Liverpool at Anfield. They would only lose once more in away matches, against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Leicester completed the double over most teams that season, from Watford where the outstanding Riyad Mahrez scored the winner at Vicarage Road to Crystal Palace with a pair of 1-0 victories.

Four points were taken off Tottenham Hotspur.  Robert Huth with the winner at White Hart Lane in the pre-Tottenham Hotspur Stadium days and Manchester United could not beat them at the King Power or at Old Trafford.

Leicester ended up winning the title by 10 points meaning their last game at Stamford Bridge was a celebration lap. They entered the Champions League for the first time the next season. So great was this achievement that many forget that Leicester won their first FA Cup only a few years later beating Chelsea in the final after claiming their spot at Wembley with a semi-final win against Southampton.

Leicester City Rivalries

Leicester City have several East Midlands rivals but Nottingham Forest are normally thought to be the biggest. However, because of the differing fortunes of the sides the last time the clubs met was in the second tier at the City Ground in 2014.

Current Premier League Stars for Leicester City

Without being packed full of stars player such as Youri Tielemans, James Maddison and the evergreen Jamie Vardy provide the flair. Leicester continue to play a high intensity, pressing style of football right from the kick-off.

Leicester City's 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far

With a win in their first match of the Premier League season against Wolverhampton Wanderers it was generally felt that Leicester City would be up there challenging with the big clubs once again. However a loss against West Ham United followed and a pattern of a win then a defeat set in.

Foxes fans will hope for a push for a Europa League spot in the second half of the season.
