Brief History of West Ham United
The Hammers were founded in 1895. Originally named Thames Ironworks for the first five years of their existence the club became known as West Ham United from 1900 onwards. Playing at the Boleyn Ground (also known as Upton Park) since 1904, they only moved out in 2016 to the London Stadium, originally used as the athletics stadium for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. It was thought either Tottenham were also in the running for the stadiums until the Irons won that London Derby.
Legendary Players for West Ham United
Bobby Moore was captain of the England team that won the 1966 World Cup and Moore was also the captain of West Ham United for a decade. Robert Frederick Chelsea Moore played for the Hammers for 16 years, making his debut against Manchester United in 1958. As unflappable off the pitch as on it the centre-half ended left the football club after making 544 appearances. He won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award in 1966.
Moore's legacy will be felt by all in the country for years to come. The Bobby Moore Fund raises money and awareness of bowel cancer, the disease that took Moore's life, aged 51.
Hammers' World Cup
Three members of the England World Cup winning side from 1966 played for West Ham. Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst. They were three key members of the team. Moore captained the team, Hurst scored a hat-trick in the Final and Peters scored the other goal. Peters scored around one goal in four throughout his career for West Ham, Tottenham and Norwich but his link-up play was superb. Hurst was a natural goalscorer.
On Barking Road in East Ham there is a statue commemorating the three players who came up through the youth ranks at West Ham. The statue also includes Everton's Ray Wilson.
Hammers Rivalries
Due to the proximity of the clubs, Tottenham are one of the biggest rivalries for West Ham. Many big players over the years have also left West Ham to play for Spurs including Martin Peters, fuelling the rivalry.
Matches between West Ham and Millwall became synonymous with hooliganism and violence in the 1970's and 1980's. Though violence has quelled there is still rivalry with both sets of fans despite the clubs rarely playing each other in the last couple of decades.
Other London rivalries include Chelsea, also a club known to take in former West Ham young stars.
West Ham 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far
Under Scottish manager David Moyes the Hammers have had an exceptional kick-off to the season. Challenging the established order of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United is not the end of the table that the Hammers have been used to in recent years. Challenging for a Europa League sport for the 2022/23 season is not an unrealistic expectation.
The Hammers beat Newcastle United starting an impressive run of form in away matches. They followed that with a demolition of well-fancied Leicester City. Matchday wins at Leeds United, Everton and Aston Villa followed.
Home victories followed against Liverpool and while the Hammers lost at Manchester City, they ran the most impressive team in the Premier League close.
Narrowly sneaking past Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough in the Emirates FA Cup was an uncharacteristic performance and the second-half of the season looks like it could be West Ham United's best for years.
