Brief History of Brighton & Hove Albion

In English footballing terms Brighton & Hove Albion are a relatively new club having been formed in 1901. Most of their existence they have resided in the lower tiers of English league football with a brief spell in the top flight in the early 1980’s and their current stint in the Premier League that started in 2017. In the modern era The Seagulls often struggled to find a permanent home and there has often been more action off the pitch than on. That all changed in 2012 when they moved into the Falmer Stadium, now the American Express Community Stadium or The Amex.

Legendary Players for Brighton

Sometimes clubs just fit players and with Bobby Zamora Brighton fitted him perfectly. Scoring 90 goals in just 162 appearances across two spells with the club Zamora was the definition of prolific. A true centre-forward he not only scored goals but was an integral part of a Brighton team that won back-to-back promotions to take them up to the second tier of English football. Zamora would go on to play for many top flight clubs including West Ham United but he was never as prolific as his first spell at Brighton (2000-2003).

Brighton's Double Heartbreak

The Seagulls were promoted to the top flight (then named the First Division) at the conclusion of the 1978/79 season under manager Alan Mullery. Up against the giants of English football they stayed in the First Division until the 1983/83 season when they suffered heartbreak, finishing at the bottom of the league and returning to the second.

However, that was not the only notably thing about Brighton’s 1982/83 season because despite poor form in the league they excelled in the FA Cup making it to Wembley to play Manchester United in the Cup Final. They downed the likes of Newcastle United, Liverpool, Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday on the way.

Taking the lead against Manchester United through Gordon Smith they began to dream, until they conceded twice. Gary Stevens’ late equaliser forced a replay five days later. But the replay itself proved a step too far for Brighton, who were three-nil down at half-time eventually losing four-nil in the season finale. They had suffered the double no-one wants. Relegation and Cup Final defeat in the same season.

Brighton Ground Uncertainty

The Goldstone Ground in Hove was home to Brighton for the first 95 years of their existence until the ground was sold, essentially leaving the Seagulls homeless. They groundshared 74 miles from Brighton with Gillingham for two years before returning to Sussex and settling at the Withdean Stadium in 1999.

But the Withdean Stadium was principally an athletics stadium and problems soon occurred. With a low capacity gate income was low and the club were in financial difficulty. Despite the best efforts of the Seagulls’ fans there was a lack of atmosphere due to the open nature of the ground and the athletics track around the pitch.

So after years of fundraising to help keep the club afloat and campaigns from supporters of the club they eventually moved to the Falmer Stadium in 2012. A modern stadium it is easily accessible by road and public transport and ended years of uncertainty for the club.

Brighton and Hove Albion's Current Stars

In Graham Potter, Brighton have one of English football’s box office young managers. Brighton came back to the UK after a successful seven year stay at Ostersund in Sweden. He managed Swansea City for a year before settling with Brighton. With an attacking, passing style of football Brighton are easy on the eye.

Stars Neil Maupay, Tariq Lamptey and Marc Cucurella provide skill in abundance. Captain Lewis Dunk, Dan Burn or Alan Webster keep it tight at the back.

A23/M23 Derby

Brighton’s biggest rivalry is with Crystal Palace despite the teams being over 40 miles apart. It is named the A23 or the M23 Derby due to the roads that connects the teams. The rivalry began in the 1970’s after friction between Palace manager Terry Venables and his Brighton counterpart Alan Mullery. This riled the fans and the game has been termed a derby ever since.

A modern stadium, The American Express Community Stadium is on the outskirts of Brighton and is home to a passionate season-ticket holders who once again have a home they can call their own. Only a short distance from the city Brighton is a favourite destination for away fans combining their weekend at the football with a weekend away or a night out in the city.

Since Brighton and Hove Albion's ground is on the south coast of England, it can be a bit of a pain to get to. There are good connections out of London Victoria train station, straight into the town, and you can get a good deal on train tickets if you plan ahead and travel off-peak.
