Brief History of Leeds United

Founded in 1919, Leeds United have been playing their home games at Elland Road since the very start. Prior to the formation of Leeds United, a club under the name of Leeds City used to play at Elland Road until that club was disbanded after the First World War. In the 2000's Elland Road saw some big Champions League nights before the club took a slump into the second and third tiers of English football for a sustained period. They are now back in the Premier League under the genius of Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Legendary Players for Leeds United

'King Billy' Bremner is a Leeds United legend. As the statue outside Elland Road says the small Scottish midfielder played 771 games for Leeds scoring 115 goals in the process. Bremner was famously part of the successful Don Revie era in the 1960's and 70's when Leeds were one of the most feared sides in the United Kingdom. Choosing Leeds United over both Arsenal and Chelsea Bremner joined United in 1959. He went on to win the First Division title twice, the FA Cup once and the League Cup (currently known as the Carabao Cup) once. He was named Football Writers Association Player of the Year in 1970.

Revie Years

The Don Revie years from 1961 to 1974 were undoubtably the most successful in terms of silverware in Leeds United's history. Revie made Elland Road a fearsome place to come. When Revie took over Leeds were in the Second Division. By the 1964/65 season they were challenging the likes of Manchester United for the First Division title. They also reached the final of the FA Cup that season losing to Liverpool after extra-time.

That season and the Liverpool vs Leeds loss served notice of what was to come in the subsequent years. Another FA cup semi-final in 1966/67 saw a narrow loss to Chelsea in one of the rivalries that would define the era.

The 1967/68 season saw Leeds win the League Cup, defeating Arsenal in the final at Wembley but losing in the semi-finals of the FA Cup to Everton.

The following season Leeds won the league title, securing the title at Anfield. What followed was more success after success until Revie accepted the role as England manager in 1973/74. Famously he was replaced by Brian Clough and Leeds struggled to return to the heady days of the Revie period again.

Leeds would have to wait until the 1991/92 season to win the league again, the season before the advent of the English Premier League. That season they pipped Manchester United and Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday to the title.

Leeds United Rivalries

Leeds have many rivalries across the country and not restricted to just Yorkshire. In fact it is a cross Pennine rivalry with Manchester United that has developed over recent decades. Heightened by mercurial French fan's favourite departing Elland Road for Old Trafford in the early 90's.

The aforementioned rivalry with Chelsea emanated in the 60's and 70's and games between the two whether at Elland Road or Stamford Bridge were tough physical affairs. Straight from kick-off the teams were often at each other's heels. The 1970 FA Cup Final was a good example. Going to a replay after a 2-2 draw at Wembley the London side lifted the Cup.

The Brazilian Raphinha joined Leeds in 2020 making his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers, his first goal came a month later against Everton and since that day he has become feared by defenders up and down the country.
