Brief History of Aston Villa FC

Aston Villa Football Club have had membership of the Football League in the United Kingdom since it started. Established in 1874 and famously adorning their claret and blue colours Aston Villa are the more successful of the two big Birmingham teams. They have played at the 42,000 capacity Villa Park since 1897. Before FA Cup semi-finals began being played at Wembley, Villa Park was a regular venue for neutral semi-finals, ideally situated in the middle of the country for fans of clubs from the North and South of England.

Today there is also a women's team. AVWFC play in the English women's Super League. You can check out the ticket office for ticket information on these games.

Legendary Players for Aston Villa

AVFC are a club with numerous contenders for the title of most legendary player. Paul McGrath, the defender signed from Manchester United who could never train due to serious knee problems nevertheless read the game better than anyone. Peter Withe scored the winning goal in the 1982 European Cup Final but Villa’s best must be the Scot, Allan Evans. A centre-half originally signed as a centre-forward, Evans was a rock at the back during the late 1970’s and 1980’s and may not be remembered by those outside Villa Park but left an indelible mark on all Villa fans.

It Must Be, It Is, Peter Withe

That immortal commentary from commentary heavyweight Brian Moore summarised Aston Villa’s greatest moment, the aforementioned goal from Peter Withe that won the 1982 European Cup Final against West German giants Bayern Munich. Triumphing by that single goal to nil the Aston Villa defence kept out the top three scorers in the competition that year, Dieter Hoeness, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Paul Brietner and secured their membership to one of European football's most exclusive clubs.

Young number-two goalkeeper Nigel Spink had not expected to play in the final but number-one Jimmy Rimmer sustained an injury. Then followed Spink’s unbelievable clean sheet as he denied the Munich forwards on a number of occasions.

Whilst this is Villa’s most memorable moment they had a lot of success around the turn of the 20th century up until and immediately following the First World War.

Despite this early success they have not always had uninterrupted stays in the top flight of English football, dropping into the second-tier before finding their way back to the promised land, their most recent return to the Premier League following play-off victory in 2018/19.

Aston Villa's Unique Name

Alongside other unique names such as Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal, Aston Villa’s name is known around the world. The only Villa to have played in the upper echelons of English football the name comes from the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel closely linked to the formation of the club. The district the chapel was in was originally named after a large villa that was built in the area and was known for miles around.

Aston Villa's Current Premier League Stars

Aston Villa boast one of the Premier League' s most promising young managers in the former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. Lured back to the Premier League after a successful start to his managerial career at Rangers, north of the border, Gerrard’s high intensity pressing style of football has people talking.

It is the Scot John McGinn who provides the intensity Gerrard is looking for at Villa Park. All-action, tough-tackling and with the vision to unlock defences McGinn is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Gerrard has also brought a huge name back to the Premier League on loan. Philippe Coutinho may not have shone in a Barcelona or Bayern Munich shirt but he was outstanding in the red of Liverpool and played alongside Gerrard for a couple of seasons.

Throw in the skilful Argentine Emi Buendia, new French signing Lucas Digne and the prolific Ollie Watkins and Villa look to be a side on the rise.

Aston Villa's 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far

Despite these exciting signings Aston Villa lost their opening Premier League game of the 2021/22 season to Watford. After Watford went three-nil up Aston Villa fought back to make it 3-2 with McGinn netting one of the goals.

Dean Smith would soon lose his job as head coach as Gerrard came in. Gerrard's first Premier League game against Brighton saw him secure a 2-0 win with Brighton conceding two late goals to the Villa Park men.

Aston Villa Colours and Crest

The Aston Villa badge includes a lion and a star to denote the one time the club won the European Cup. The lion comes from early owners of the club who adopted the Scottish Lion on the badge. The Villa Park Club have played in claret and blue since the late 1800’s. With only Premier League opponents West Ham United and Burnley playing in a similar colours, they rarely have the necessity to play in their away kit.

The ‘What’ Cup?

Aston Villa won the Intertoto Cup on two occasions, once in 2001 and once in 2008. The nature of the Intertoto Cup was that they shared success on both occasions. In 2001 with two other European clubs and in 2008 with 10 others (although SC Braga were named the outright winners). A vehicle to get into the main UEFA Cup draw in the 2000’s the tournament was played in the summer months lengthening the season for those who had qualified. Popular with fans only because it allowed them a summer break combined with a football match the tournament was scrapped after 2008.

Reason to Go to Villa Park

Villa are the entertainers of the Premier League this season. Packed with skill across the park Villa season ticket holders will say they are delight to watch. But another reason to go is to experience the noise of Villa Park's Holte End. Packed with fervent Villans the Holte End has over 13,000 seats making it one of the largest ends in the country. The noise generated there has encouraged home sides and intimidated Premier League opponents over the years making Villa Park one of the ‘must visit’ grounds in the country. With over 30,000 season ticket holders tickets for Villa Park are of great value.

When it comes to traveling to Villa Park then you are better off using public transport to get there on matchday since it can be difficult to park a car and find an empty car park in the local area. In fact this is a similar problem with what ever football team you support, as driving to St James Park, the Molineux Stadium, Amex Stadium or the Etihad Stadium (to name but a few) can be stressful and more trouble than it is worth.

Many football fans opt for coach travel or take the train if that is convenient. If you're a full time student you can get discounts on public transport that can make the journey a little cheaper.

When it comes to rivalries Aston Villa consider a few teams as rivals. You might find the tensions rise for Coventry City, Leicester City, or Wolverhampton Wanderers games. So if you support on of these teams you might need to pay a little more for one of these tickets. However, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Norwich City, Tottenham or Southampton fans for example, might be able to pick up a bargain or get a ticket close to face value since there aren't big historical rivalries between the teams.
