Brief History of Newcastle United
Newcastle United were founded in 1892 after existing teams Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End merged, hence the new name of the team Newcastle 'United'. The team have been playing at the 52,000 capacity St James' Park since its formation. Bar an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup win in 1969 and the Intertoto Cup in 2006 most of the success for the club came pre-1955 and since then the club have not won a major trophy.
With a few years in the second tier in recent decades The Magpies have been in the Premier League since 2017 and following a recent buyout of former owner Mike Ashley by a consortium lead by backers in Saudi Arabia, the football club and fans from Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding areas enter a new exciting era.
Legendary Players for Newcastle United
Alan Shearer famously turned down the chance to play for Manchester United to play his football at his hometown club, Newcastle United. Signed for a then world record £15 million and adored by the Magpies fans his name rang out from the Gallowgate end at home matches. Shearer got more than his fair allocation of goals as well, 206 goals in 405 appearances for Newcastle. Truly box office, his strength straight from the kick-off was a menace to defenders and a joy for fans of this North East club.
I'd Love It (Kevin Keegan)
Kevin Keegan was a star for Newcastle on the pitch and dearly loved for his time as manager of Newcastle United. In 1992 Keegan took over the reigns at the club and delivered the second of their Second Division league titles in the 1992/93 season.
With an all attacking style of play and a team with the likes of Rob Lee, Andy Cole and Tino Asprillia Newcastle were everyone's favourite second team. Keegan's famous rant ("I'd love it if we beat them") on Sky Sports about Alex Ferguson has gone down in folklore but it gets forgotten that in 1995/96 and 1996/97 his exceptional team finished runner-up in the Premier League and were without doubt one of the most entertaining teams in the United Kingdom.
NUFC Rivalries
There is one major rivalry in the North East. Put simply, Sunderland vs Newcastle United. Whether at the Stadium of Light or at NE1 4ST, this match and this rivalry is talked about all the time even though the teams have not played a league match since 2016. Season ticket holders make sure they are in their seats, home tickets are at a premium and away tickets are sold out. This is one matchday fans of both teams never miss.
Current Premier League Stars for Newcastle United
English football is much better for being graced with Alain Saint-Maximin. Full of charisma and unpredictable on the pitch, Saint-Maximin is a terror for opposition defenders. He has recently been joined by some world stars including ex-player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Kieran Trippier and Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
Newcastle United's 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far
Newcastle did not start the season well under Steve Bruce, with an opening day defeat at West Ham United, defeats at Aston Villa and Manchester United followed. Bruce would soon be replaced by Eddie Howe and on 15th game of the season Newcastle United and Eddie Howe got their first win at home against Burnley.
Wins still proved difficult though as the club focussed on bringing fresh experienced blood in the January transfer window. This was brought into even more focus in December after heavy defeats against Liverpool and Leicester City until the club got their second win of the season, away at Leeds United at the end of January.

Reasons to Go to St James' Park for Newcastle United Home Games
St James' Park is based in Newcastle City Centre a short walk from local pubs and eateries. Newcastle United is a religion for the people of the Newcastle and the surrounding area and the roar from the crowd is something special. If you can't get to a Magpies game at St James' Park go and watch them away from home. Newcastle fans always travel in large numbers.
Of course if you are a Brighton & Hove Albion fan you might find travelling to Newcastle is quite a trek due to the distance between the two teams.
However even though you might think that London would be too far to travel for say, Chelsea, Arsenal or Brentford fans, with some great train connections out of London King's Cross to Newcastle being around 3 and a half hours, most fans can get to Newcastle for an afternoon kickoff. For teams that are closer, such as Manchester City, Liverpool and Everton these cross-country trips can be done fairly quickly. Newcastle is a great city with plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants so away football fans can make a good day of it.
