Brief History of Everton Football Club

Established in 1878 as St Domingo’s FC, before a year later changing their name to Everton FC, ‘The Toffees’ are one of the two ‘big’ clubs in the football hot-bed that is Merseyside. Everton have been based at Goodison Park since 1892, two-milesnorth of Liverpool city centre. They are near neighbours to their illustrious rivals Liverpool FC who are a stone’s throw away across Stanley Park.  The classic "Merseyside Derby" has often been one of the common requests for ticket information.

Ticket 4 Football carries football tickets for some of the top Everton FC matches, including FA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Europa League and more, including matchday tickets and season tickets.

Legendary Football Players

Everton has been home to many legendary players but none more so than the remarkable ‘Dixie Dean’ who would go down in English football folklore. Now with his statue welcoming fans to Goodison Park, Dean scored 383 goals in 438 appearances for the club from 1925 to 1937, once scoring 60 goals in a single season.

The Kendall Years

Although Everton’s last major trophy came in 1995 courtesy of a 1-0 defeat of Manchester United in the FA Cup Final, Everton have had significant glory years in the not too distant past. The 1960’s but particularly the 1980’s were the club’s golden years.

The man to steer them to success in the 80’s was Howard Kendall. Kendall would return to manage the club for two further spells in the 90’s but his time at Everton in the mid-1980’s was significant.

Kendall had already won the league with Everton as a player in 1969/70 so he was guaranteed a good welcome from the Blueboys’ faithful but he would soon become their favourite son. From 1981 to 1987 he guided Everton to two league titles (1984/85, 1986/87), the FA Cup (1984) and a memorable European Cup Winner’ Cup in 1985.

Most Everton fans will be able to reel off the names of that team with ease, Graeme Sharp, Neville Southall, Peter Reid, Kevin Sheedy and Trevor Steven stand out. TV presenter Gary Lineker played for Everton in the 1985/86 season scoring 40 goals before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur.

Big Dunc

In recent years silverware has been hard to obtain but the club have still produced some notable players including Duncan Ferguson. The club’s Premier League second top scorer (behind Romelu Lukaku) formed a fearsome reputation. Exceptional in the air and physical on the ground Ferguson was part of the 1995 FA Cup winning team and has gone on to be a part of the club staff, even stepping in as caretaker manager on two occasions.

Current Stars on Everton FC

The current Everton team boasts England internationals Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin and is home to international stars including Brazilian forward Richarlison and Columbian centre-half Yerry Mina. Recently managed by Spaniard Rafa Benitez the club are on the lookout for their next manager to steer them back into European competition^. (see note at bottom of page)

Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

‘Nothing but the best is good enough’ or ‘Nil Satis Nisi Optimum’ is the club’s motto. Previously featuring on the club crest until it was redesigned in 2014 the club’s motto still remains. The club crest includes ‘Everton Tower’ sometimes called ‘Prince Rupert’s Tower’ a structure that still remains in Everton to this day.

Goodison Park is one of the last remaining traditional grounds. Based in between terraced housing the ground offers a unique experience. With the crowd close to the pitch the atmosphere often reaches fever pitch. With the ground set to be mothballed in 2024 there are limited opportunities left.
